Upon proposal by the Provincial Councillor for Environment and Spatial Development, Peter Brunner, the Provincial Government has officially designated radon risk areas in South Tyrol for the first time. These areas are displayed on a map, which is also available on the website of the Provincial Agency for Environment and Climate Protection.
The classification is based on measurement data collected over the past 20 years and evaluated by the Provincial Agency for Environment and Climate Protection. The categorization also follows an EU directive that South Tyrol is required to implement. Locations where defined threshold levels are exceeded are classified as risk areas.
Sealing Basements or Ground Floors to Protect Your Health
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings from the soil and accumulate, particularly in basements and ground floors. Long-term exposure to elevated concentrations significantly increases the risk of lung cancer. According to the World Health Organization, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.
However, the classification of municipalities as risk areas does not mean there is immediate danger.
“The radon map is intended to inform. It shows where we should take a closer look. For residents, this primarily means taking preventive measures consciously and implementing simple precautions,” emphasizes Councillor Brunner.
Luca Verdi, Director of the Laboratory for Air Analysis and Radiation Protection, adds:
“Radon is a noble gas and cannot be detected by our senses. Therefore, measurements are necessary and recommended in order to determine its concentration. This allows us to assess whether and to what extent action is required. Even simple measures can have a positive effect: ventilation, minor structural adjustments, or sealing basement areas can significantly reduce radon levels.”
